Fasting is a part of sawm (one of the five tenants of Islam). However, there are special allowances given for young children and those who are pregnant, nursing, menstruating, ill, traveling, or elderly. All Muslims are required to do this every year. We will cover Eid-al Fitr in another post as the date gets closer.ĭuring Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. Families come together for this big meal, and they exchange presents. At the end of Ramadan, there is a three-day celebration called Eid al Fitr, which means the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. Ramadan is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline, increased prayers, charity, generosity, and time spent with family. We will cover this celebration in another post as the date gets closer. Laylat al-Qadr is celebrated on the 27th day of Ramadan, and is considered the holiest day of the year for Muslims. That night, is known as “The Night of Power” or Laylat al-Qadr. Muslims believe that during this month, Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran (the sacred text of Islam), to Mohammed. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims. The dates of Ramadan change year to year, as the Muslim calendar is based on a lunar calendar. This year it begins at sundown on Sunday, May 5 and will end at sundown on Tuesday, June 4. Ramadan is a holiday celebrated by Muslims all around the world.
